Dendroworld: FAQ: Mantellas

Mantellas

Originating from Madagascar rather than The Americas, Mantellas are not closely related to dartfrogs, and their superficial similarities are believed to represent convergent evolution.

Mantella aurantiacaMantella aurantiaca
Day-glo orange and easily the most outgoing Mantella species, some of which are quite reclusive compared with most dartfrogs. Coming from altitude, these frogs prefer lower temperatures (<28°C), and require a cool, drier winter break for breeding the following year. The best Mantella for beginners and quite a good all-round beginners frogs as long as reasonable temperatures can be maintained. Large eggs clutches are hidden away by the parents. No parental care, so remove eggs for separate rearing.

Mantella viridisMantella viridis
The second most commonly kept Mantella, although more cryptically coloured and secretive than M. aurantiaca. Higher humidities generally mean these frogs become more outgoing.
