An Orchid for the Vivarium

Ludisia discolor belongs to the group known as the Jewel Orchids, so called because of their ornamental leaves which are of a dark reddish-purple colour and on which the veins gleam like liquid gold. The plants originate from Southeast Asia.

The compost should be peat-based, freely draining and remain moist at all times. The plant does not require high light levels, but does need high humidity and warm temperatures. The Dendrobatid vivarium should provide ideal conditions.

Ludisia forms creeping stems that grow across the surface of the compost, rooting at the nodes. Each stem turns upright after a short distance and reaches a height of about 20cms.
